Julie Burrows, co-founder of UpTurnships, has been chosen as a 50 Over 50 Most Inspiring Leaders from across Minnesota by AARP. Stating that “it’s time to recognize that possibilities shouldn’t be limited by age,” AARP called for nominations in five categories: arts, business, community, disruptor and nonprofit. The names of the 50 Leaders were announced in August; a celebratory event for the winners is planned for Oct. 17. Names of the Leaders can be found at www.50over50.org.
Burrows’ internship and coaching nonprofit serves college juniors and sophomores who need a paid internship, preparing them for a career in business. All candidates are paying the vast majority of college expenses, many of are 1st generation college students, and all are highly motivated.
Now a social entrepreneur, Burrows is a marketing professional, a former Pillsbury vice-president and graduate of Harvard Business School and Wellesley College. Her work with the ‘UpTurns’ is volunteer; she gets tremendous support from the UpTurnships’ leadership team and her husband Jeff, a Medtronic executive.
UpTurnships started the summer of 2014 with eight interns working at paid internships Mondays through Thursdays and being coached on Fridays in rooms at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Minneapolis, where Burrows had earlier served as congregation president. Summer 2015 found the program at Augsburg College serving 22 collegians. The program has grown each year with Boomers volunteering as mentor/coaches for the students.
Due to the tireless work of Burrows, co-founder, Libby Trader, and the UpTurnships’ volunteers, more and more businesses are becoming employer-sponsors while the graduating UpTurns are finding rewarding permanent jobs. 86% of Alums have a job within two months of college graduation. Come Summer 2018 UpTurnships will double with over 40 collegians augmenting their on-the-job internships with focused coaching and classes on professional business skills. They are the next generation of business leaders in the Twin Cities, already giving back to UpTurnships.
